Diplomat Season 2″ is set for its official release on Netflix, a move that comes as no shock, given its tremendous success on the streaming service. (Not renewing a show after the explosive conclusion of Season 1 would have been cruel!)

The political drama follows the career of politician Kate Wailer as she takes on a new high-profile job as the UK ambassador amidst an international crisis, all while trying to navigate her stormy marriage with career politician Hal.

With a cast featuring the likes of Kerry Russell, Rory Kinnear from “Bank of Dave,” and Rufus Sewell from “The Old Guard,” the new show, “Diplomat,” has successfully held its position in Netflix’s global top 10 for quite some time.

With confirmation of Kate’s reprisal, dive into the essential details surrounding the upcoming installment, “Diplomat Season 2.”

Expected Release Date for Diplomat Season 2: When Can We Expect It?

As mentioned above, “Diplomat” has been officially renewed for Season 2 on Netflix, although we are still waiting for a specific release date.

This isn’t surprising considering the show was watched for over 57.48 million hours in its first weekend of release, making it the number one show on Netflix in the United States and in the top 10 in 86 other countries.

Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of Drama Series, said: “Fans all over the world are loving every minute of ‘Diplomat’s‘ entertaining and inspirational drama, and are relishing Kerry Russell’s powerful performance as Kate Wailer.”

Following that breathtaking cliffhanger, the anticipation builds to witness the ingenious plans concocted by Deborah Kahn, Jeni Williams, and the immensely talented crew led by Kerry Russell, as they unveil their narrative prowess in the second season.

Series producer and executive Deborah Kahn added: “We had such a great time making ‘Diplomat,’ it’s been thrilling to see how much audiences are enjoying every moment of it, and we’re excited to get the chance to do it all over again!”

Despite the promises of the show, waiting for this announcement was undoubtedly nerve-wracking for fans, given Netflix’s tendency to cancel shows. However, it was reported that Kahn has signed an overall deal with the streaming giant and told Elle that she typically looks for shows that can run for multiple seasons.

Her words echoed, “Having had the fortune to contribute to numerous enduring shows throughout my journey, that’s the perspective I naturally gravitate towards.” I’m looking for stories that can go deep and long with characters you already know and have a relationship with.”

Hopefully, she had already been planning The Diplomat Season 2. However, in light of the current tense climate in Hollywood, we won’t expect it to arrive on the streaming platform anytime soon.

It’s highly unlikely that, following the strike in May, Kahn and the team have been working on developing the script for The Diplomat Season 2 on paper.

The strike doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon, as there hasn’t been any resolution about a deal, which means this impasse could continue for the rest of the year.

So, “Diplomat” fans are likely hoping for a summer 2024 release, but the odds are it’s more likely to be in the fall of 2024.

Diplomat Season 2 Cast: Who’s Returning for Diplomat Season 2?

It’s been confirmed that Kerry Russell will reprise her role as Kate Wailer (after all, you can’t have a diplomat without Kate), but who else will join her?

While this hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, we can hope to see David Gyasi as Austin Denison, along with Ali Ahn as Edra Graham and Rory Kinnear as Prime Minister Nicol Trobriz in Season 2.

The following actors are also expected to return for The Diplomat Season 2:

  • Miguel Sandoval as Miguel Gannon
  • Billie Appiah as Nana Mensa
  • Michael McKean as American President William Reburn

The fate of Kate’s husband, Hal Vayler (played by Rufus Sewell), and Stuart Heford (played by Ato Essandoh), is a bit more uncertain as they were both inside Conservative MP Merit Grove’s car during the explosion.

We see, but don’t hear, that the French police have informed Kate about the news. Are Hal and Stuart dead or just injured? If we’re lucky, we might finally find out in The Diplomat Season 2, as Kerry Russell has already started trying to bring Matthew Rhys back into the show.

Russell told The AV Club, “It’s so fun working with him. I would love that. If The Diplomat gets another season, maybe we can lure him in our way. Actually, when we were shooting last summer, I asked him, ‘Don’t you wish Deborah [Cahn, the series’ creator] would write something for you? What would you do?’ And he said, ‘Anything. You’ll never know.'”

Plot of The Diplomat Season 2

At the end of the explosive Season 1 of The Diplomat, Kate and Denison determined that Trobriz had ordered the attack on HMS Courageous and had put the Russian Lenkov Group to work killing his own people.

Then, we see the explosion with Kate and Stuart in Grove’s car before the police inform Kate about the news and the credits roll. Now that The Diplomat Season 2 is being praised, it seems we might finally find out if Hal and Stuart survived the blast or if they are recovering in a hospital.

In an interview with TUDUM, Sewell shared his hopes for the political couple’s future, saying, “I’m looking forward to seeing what that relationship becomes.” “They’re very different from each other, and yet when you scratch the surface, [you see] they’re more connected to each other than to many other characters.”

As for the marital issues between Kate and Hal, he added, “I think we have enough issues to explore (for a few seasons). Who knows?”

In the meantime, Kate and Denison are likely to make a case against Trobriz in The Diplomat Season 2.

Gyasi said of the political couple, “I’m excited to see what the relationship becomes.” “They’re very different from each other, and yet when you scratch the surface, [you see] they’re more connected to each other than to many other characters.”
